Team India’s left-arm spinner Manav Suthar has signed his first county contract with Warwickshire Bears following a remarkable Test debut against Afghanistan.
After an impressive Test debut against Afghanistan in Mullanpur, Team India’s left-arm spinner Manav Suthar has secured a county contract with Warwickshire Bears. He will participate in the next two rounds of the Rothesay County Championship.
This marks Suthar’s inaugural venture into county cricket, providing him with a valuable opportunity to further develop his skills. The young cricketer, who is still refining his craft, is eager to make an impact in this new setting.
In his debut match, Suthar showcased his talent by taking seven wickets, including an outstanding six-wicket haul in the first innings, which helped dismiss Afghanistan for just 152 runs. This performance not only earned him the Player of the Match award but also made him the ninth player in history to achieve this feat on debut. His figures of 6/33 are the second-best for an Indian debutant, trailing only Narendra Hirwani’s eight wickets in his first Test.
Before his Test debut, Suthar had already made a name for himself in domestic cricket, amassing 129 wickets in 29 first-class matches. His upcoming county games will begin with a match against Yorkshire at Scarborough from June 12 to June 15, followed by a fixture against Somerset at Taunton the following week.
James Thomas, Warwickshire’s Performance Director, expressed enthusiasm about Suthar joining the team. He stated, “We’re delighted to welcome Manav to the Bears at a really exciting time for the team. We’ve played some good red-ball cricket already this season, and Manav will bring a new aspect to our bowling attack. It shows how highly he’s rated in India after his selection to their Test team last week, so it’s going to be great to have him around the group.”
In response to his new contract with Warwickshire, Suthar shared his excitement about contributing to the team’s success. “I’m incredibly excited to be joining Warwickshire for the next two County Championship games. The team have started the season very well, so I’m hoping that I can play a part in helping them in their push for the title,” he said.
Participating in the County Championship is expected to be immensely beneficial for Suthar, especially with India likely to play a Test series in Sri Lanka in August. Although the conditions will differ significantly, the experience he gains during this stint will be invaluable for his development as a cricketer.
