An avalanche struck Mount Yalung Ri in Nepal on Monday, resulting in the tragic deaths of five foreign climbers and two Nepali guides. The incident occurred at a base camp situated at an elevation of 16,070 feet.
While the identities and nationalities of the deceased climbers have not yet been disclosed, officials confirmed that five additional climbers sustained injuries during the avalanche. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State stated that the agency is aware of the situation and is actively working to gather more information. “The U.S. Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens,” the spokesperson said. “We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide consular assistance.”
Rescue teams are currently facing significant challenges as they attempt to reach the avalanche site. Efforts to deploy a rescue helicopter were thwarted by adverse weather conditions, forcing the aircraft to turn back. Shailendra Thapa, a spokesperson for Nepal’s Armed Police Force, indicated that they plan to make another attempt at dawn on Tuesday.
Mount Yalung Ri, which rises to 18,370 feet, is often considered a suitable climbing destination for beginners without prior high-altitude experience. The mountain is part of Nepal, which is home to eight of the world’s fourteen tallest peaks, including the renowned Mount Everest.
This tragic event follows a recent incident earlier this month, where a South Korean climber lost their life while attempting to summit a Himalayan peak located just south of Mount Everest. During the autumn months, many climbers typically target smaller peaks in preparation for the harsher conditions that accompany the rainy season and winter.
As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of all climbers and providing assistance to those affected by this devastating avalanche.
