Witness Ryan Rowe described the scene, stating, “I couldn’t believe there was that much blood (that had) come out of a human body,” as he recounted his experience shortly after the attack to The West Australian.
In response to the attack, Australia’s fisheries minister, Jackie Jarvis, announced a rare catch-and-kill order for the great white shark involved, a species typically protected under Australian law. “In making that decision, I considered the exceptional circumstances of the attack, the hazard posed by the shark, and the potential recovery of coronial evidence,” Jarvis explained.
Authorities have not confirmed whether O’Neill’s remains have been recovered, but they expressed confidence that he died as a result of the shark attack. Witness Darrel Haythornthwaite shared his shock with Nine Network television, noting that O’Neill was swimming with a friend at the time of the incident. “I feel for his mate,” he said, adding that the friend expressed feelings of guilt, saying, “I didn’t save my mate.” Haythornthwaite reassured him, stating, “You couldn’t have done anything.”
O’Neill’s family released a heartfelt statement, expressing their devastation over the loss. “Our family is deeply shocked and devastated by the terrible tragedy that took the life of father, grandfather-to-be, brother, uncle, husband, and friend, Greg James O’Neill,” they said. “He was a generous, devoted family man that gave his children so much love, care, and opportunity. Greg loved the ocean and was known as a passionate swimmer, sports lover, dedicated worker, and an all-around generous, witty guy.” They also expressed gratitude for the support they have received from the community during this difficult time.
This incident marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Earlier incidents included the deaths of three spearfishing divers between May and June, as well as a tragic attack that claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy in Sydney Harbor in January. In a separate incident, a surfer sustained serious leg injuries from a shark attack about 250 miles north of Perth just days before O’Neill’s death.
