Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit sparked curiosity over the security measures surrounding his armored limousine, which was temporarily covered during transport.
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s official limousine, the Hongqi N701, drew significant attention during his recent visit to New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit. Footage of the vehicle being transported under a large black protective cover went viral on social media, prompting widespread speculation about the unusual sight.
Security experts clarified that the covering was a standard logistical precaution rather than an indication of heightened security concerns. The black tarpaulin was used solely during the vehicle’s transport through the city, and once Xi’s motorcade was in motion, the limousine was no longer obscured.
The Hongqi N701 is a heavily fortified state limousine designed exclusively for China’s top leadership. Manufactured by Hongqi, a brand under the state-owned First Automotive Works, the N701 has its roots in a model developed in 1958 for the Chinese Communist Party. The vehicle is approximately 5.5 meters long and is believed to feature bullet-resistant protection and a reinforced body structure, although official specifications remain undisclosed.
Since 2012, China has favored domestically produced vehicles for its leaders during international trips, a directive issued by Xi himself. The Hongqi N701 has accompanied Xi on various occasions, including his informal summit in Chennai in 2019.
Reports indicate that covering high-value state vehicles during international transport is a common practice among many nations. This measure is intended to protect the vehicle from dust, adverse weather conditions, and accidental damage while in transit. Additionally, it helps to limit public exposure to the vehicle’s design and features prior to its official use.
In preparation for Xi’s visit, the N701 and a backup vehicle were flown into India, along with approved communication equipment. Some equipment remained subject to Indian customs and security protocols before being cleared for use during the visit.
The attention surrounding Xi’s limousine has led to comparisons with The Beast, the armored vehicle used by the U.S. President. The Beast is equipped with numerous advanced security features, including a hermetically sealed cabin designed to protect against chemical attacks, run-flat tires, night-vision equipment, and anti-ambush measures such as smoke screens and oil slick deployment. Its armor reportedly combines aluminum, ceramic, and steel.
While the specific capabilities of the Hongqi N701 have not been confirmed, its presence in Delhi has reignited interest in China’s approach to leadership security.
In addition to the limousine, India implemented an extensive security operation for Xi’s approximately 24-hour visit. This operation addressed various potential threats, including drone activity, protests, and lone-wolf attacks. Xi is reported to be staying on the fifth floor of a central Delhi hotel, accompanied by a delegation of around 400 individuals from China.
Chinese security personnel brought their own equipment for the visit and coordinated closely with Indian agencies to ensure safety in and around Xi’s accommodation. India’s Ministry of External Affairs collaborated with Delhi Police to enhance surveillance around hotels, roads, rooftops, and other sensitive locations along Xi’s expected route, ensuring secure movements throughout his stay.
