SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), in collaboration with the West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA), has issued new immunization recommendations for the upcoming 2026-2027 respiratory virus season. These guidelines are based on insights from reputable national medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
Vaccination remains the most effective defense against respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Seasonal immunization serves as a vital public health measure to mitigate severe illness, reduce hospitalization and mortality rates, curb community transmission, and alleviate pressure on the healthcare system.
The recommendations underscore the necessity of protecting those most vulnerable to respiratory viruses. This includes the youngest and oldest members of the community, individuals at higher risk for complications—such as pregnant individuals—those residing in congregate settings, and people who interact with high-risk populations. This year, there is a particular focus on safeguarding healthcare workers from serious illness as they continue to provide care for their communities.
