Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences, stating, “The sense of grief is widespread, and our thoughts are with the families of the two pilots we lost. It is a reminder of the daily danger faced by Greece’s aviators, who remain on constant standby to protect Greece’s skies.”
Video footage captured the moment of the crash, showing a second fireball erupting as the plane disintegrated. Eyewitnesses described the scene as shocking, with one individual telling ERT, Greece’s state-owned broadcaster, “We were all stunned. It hadn’t been airborne for more than three minutes.”
The crash occurred during the annual Athens Flying Week, a popular event that showcases aerial performances. Following the tragic incident, event organizers made the decision to cancel the remaining activities and evacuate the area.
Cyprus’ Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas also expressed his sorrow, stating, “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of the two officers of the Hellenic Air Force, who lost their lives in the tragic accident that occurred during the air show at Tanagra Air Base.” He noted that he had reached out to Nikos Dendias, Greece’s Minister of National Defense, to convey his condolences.
In response to the tragedy, the Greek Air Force has declared three days of mourning throughout the country. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with military aviation, particularly during public demonstrations.
This is not the first time an air show has seen tragedy; in May, two jets collided during an event in Idaho, but the pilots managed to safely eject.
