NEW DELHI – The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on August 15 that the inaugural Suryapath Tiranga Global Relay has successfully concluded. This unique initiative journeyed from Fiji in the East to the United States in the West, passing through 54 countries and multiple time zones as India celebrated its 80th Independence Day.
The Suryapath Tiranga initiative was launched as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, which aims to promote national pride and unity among Indians worldwide.
According to the MEA, the relay commenced from the High Commission of India in Fiji, symbolizing the spirit of the Tiranga as it traveled from one sunrise to the next. The event fostered a sense of community among the Indian diaspora and friends of India globally. The relay culminated with a flag hoisting ceremony conducted by the Consulate General of India in San Francisco.
In addition to celebrating Independence Day, the relay commemorated the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram,” a song that has become a symbol of India’s national spirit and pride. The MEA noted that the event garnered enthusiastic participation from members of the Indian diaspora, reflecting their deep emotional connection to the Tiranga.
Indian diplomatic missions across various countries utilized social media platform X to document the relay, sharing updates and handing over the campaign to the next country after hoisting the flag at dawn.
The High Commission of India in Suva marked the beginning of the global Tiranga relay with the first rays of the sun, stating, “With the first rays of the sun, the Indian flag was raised first in Suva, Fiji, marking the beginning of the global Tiranga relay, ‘Surya Path Tiranga’ — a symbolic journey carrying the spirit of India’s Independence Day across the world.”
As the relay progressed, the Indian Tricolor was hoisted at the Embassy of India in Spain, where officials expressed their pride in continuing the journey. The Embassy of India in Spain stated, “The Tiranga rises from our shores at the break of dawn. Over to the Embassy of India, Morocco, to continue this historic journey of Suryapath Tiranga. Carry the Indian Tricolor from one sunrise to the next, and inspire Indians to spread the fervor of Har Ghar Tiranga!”
The relay continued through Morocco, where the flag was raised before passing the baton to the Embassy of India in Iceland. The journey then took the Tiranga through Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Dominican Republic.
In the Dominican Republic, the Embassy handed over the relay to the Consulate General of India in New York. The journey then traversed Colombia, the High Commission of India in Ottawa, the High Commission of India in Kingston, Jamaica, the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., the Embassy of India in Lima, Peru, the Consulate General of India in Toronto, and the Embassy of India in Mexico before reaching its final destination in San Francisco.
Upon the relay’s conclusion at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco, officials stated, “With the Tiranga proudly unfurled at the Consulate General of India, San Francisco, in the U.S.A., Suryapath Tiranga reaches its inspiring conclusion. Following the rising sun from East to West, this first-of-its-kind global relay under Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 brought together participating Indian Missions in a collective celebration of 150 Years of Vande Mataram, our shared heritage and our enduring national pride.”
In addition to the relay, several Indian diplomatic missions presented certificates to top scorers of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz (Independence Day Special Edition), organized by the MEA, further engaging the diaspora in the celebrations.
