Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised the Telugu community for its significant contributions to the state’s success in various sectors during the American Telugu Association’s 19th convention in Baltimore.
WASHINGTON, DC – Maryland Governor Wes Moore commended the Telugu community for its vital role in shaping the state’s achievements across multiple sectors, including technology, healthcare, business, and academia.
Speaking at the closing session of the 19th convention of the American Telugu Association (ATA) in Baltimore, Moore addressed thousands of attendees, emphasizing that the community remains a major asset for Maryland.
“The Telugu community is at the forefront of Maryland’s strength as a technology, medical, business, and academic powerhouse,” Moore stated during his address, as reported by PTI.
In addition to recognizing the contributions of the Telugu community, Moore acknowledged Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Katragadda Miller, who hails from Hyderabad. The governor and Miller were elected together in 2022, marking significant milestones for the state: Moore became Maryland’s first elected Black governor, while Miller made history as the first woman of color to serve as lieutenant governor.
According to PTI, only three Black individuals have been elected governors in the United States throughout the nation’s 250-year history.
The ATA convention brought together members of the Telugu community from across the United States over a span of three days. Among the notable public officials in attendance was Virginia Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi, who also has roots in Hyderabad, having moved to the United States with her parents at the age of four.
The event featured several leaders from Telangana, including Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy, and Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao. Other attendees included MLAs T. Rammohan Reddy, Yennem Srinivas Reddy, and Manohar Reddy, along with Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao.
The gathering served not only as a celebration of the Telugu community’s achievements but also as a platform for fostering connections among members and leaders from various sectors.
As the convention concluded, the sentiments expressed by Governor Moore and other officials underscored the importance of the Telugu community in Maryland’s ongoing growth and development.
