Pratim Biswas, an accomplished Indian American scholar, has been appointed the inaugural Executive Director of the Institute for Engineering Innovation at Vanderbilt University, focusing on AI and data-driven technologies.
Pratim Biswas, a distinguished Indian American scholar and renowned aerosol scientist, has been appointed as the inaugural Executive Director of the Institute for Engineering Innovation at Vanderbilt University’s West Palm Beach campus.
Biswas, whose research spans energy and environmental nanotechnology, solar energy, air quality, and medicine, will also serve as the Executive Director for Global Engagement at the Vanderbilt School of Engineering. His appointment is effective August 16, as announced by the university.
A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Biswas comes to Vanderbilt from the University of Miami, where he held the position of dean of the College of Engineering. Prior to that, he served as assistant vice chancellor for international programs and chair of the Department of Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.
Krish Roy, the Bruce and Bridgitt Evans Dean of Engineering and University Distinguished Professor, expressed confidence in Biswas’s leadership. “His experience in the South Florida ecosystem and exceptional leadership will accelerate Vanderbilt’s engagement with industries driving growth across the region—from aerospace and advanced manufacturing to cleantech, defense, national security, and the built environment,” Roy stated. “He will also play a critical role in advancing the AI- and data-driven technologies that are reshaping these sectors and creating new possibilities for innovation and impact.”
Biswas is a Fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR). His accolades also include the Fuchs Award, the premier international recognition for outstanding contributions in aerosol science and technology, as well as the Ralph White Award from the International Society for Electrostatic Precipitation and the Cecil Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers for exemplary achievements in environmental engineering. He has also been honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award at Washington University in St. Louis and recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Bombay.
“I am excited to lead Vanderbilt’s visionary Institute for Engineering Innovation as the university expands into one of the country’s most vibrant business environments,” Biswas remarked. “The opportunity to bring together research, education, and industry to solve important challenges and create meaningful impact is what drew me to this role, and I look forward to helping build that future.”
With 17 patents to his name, Biswas has secured over $50 million in research funding from various agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Energy (DOE), as well as from industry partners. He has co-founded two start-up companies, Applied Particle Technology (APT) and Smart Aerosol Technology (SmArT LLC). Additionally, he has served as associate editor of Aerosol Science and Technology and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Aerosol Science.
Biswas is actively involved in numerous professional societies, having served as President of both the American Association for Aerosol Research and the International Aerosol Research Assembly, which comprises over 15 national aerosol societies. He is also a member of several boards, including the IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation.
He earned his PhD from the California Institute of Technology, his MS from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his BTech degree from IIT Bombay.
According to The American Bazaar, Biswas’s leadership at Vanderbilt is expected to significantly enhance the university’s role in engineering innovation and collaboration with industry.
