A devastating fire at a residential and commercial building in northeast Edmonton claimed one life on Monday night, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Authorities have not yet identified the victim, and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The fire broke out at a low-rise building located at 13126 82 Street, near the intersection of 132 Avenue and 82 Street in Edmonton’s Killarney neighbourhood. The structure houses commercial businesses on the ground floor, with residential units situated above.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services received the emergency call at 9:19 p.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene within four minutes, and due to the intensity of the blaze, the incident was upgraded to a second-alarm fire at 9:24 p.m. Thick black smoke was visible from several kilometres away.

A total of 11 fire crews, comprising approximately 44 firefighters, responded to the second-alarm fire and evacuated the entire building. Emergency medical teams were also present, with multiple ambulances on standby.

As a precautionary measure, ATCO shut off natural gas service to around 1,700 customers in the Glengarry, Killarney, and Balwin neighbourhoods. The utility company indicated that gas service would be restored only after emergency officials declared the area safe.

The incident unfolded on the night of July 13, 2026, with emergency crews responding shortly after 9:19 p.m. Local authorities continued their operations into the night as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.

Fire officials confirmed that one person died in the fire. While authorities have not released the victim’s identity, no official information has been provided regarding additional injuries. Between eight and ten ambulances were dispatched to the scene to assist emergency responders.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Officials have not confirmed how the blaze started, and reports circulating on social media about an explosion or a vehicle collision have not been substantiated by authorities.

To facilitate the safe management of the incident, the Edmonton Police Service closed 82 Street between 137 Avenue and Yellowhead Trail in both directions. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes until further notice.

As of the latest updates, firefighters have completed the evacuation and continue to assess the damage. Authorities have confirmed one fatality but have not released the victim’s identity or the cause of the fire. Road closures remain in effect while investigators and emergency crews work at the scene, and the fire continues to be under investigation, according to The Sunday Guardian.
