Customs and Border Protection agents seized over $3.7 million worth of cocaine hidden in a cucumber shipment at a Texas border inspection site, underscoring ongoing smuggling challenges.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents recently uncovered a significant cocaine stash disguised as a shipment of cucumbers at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas. The seizure, which occurred last Wednesday, involved 112 packages containing a total of 278.88 pounds of cocaine, valued at approximately $3,723,654 on the street.

The discovery was made during a routine inspection of a tractor-trailer. CBP agents utilized a canine unit and a nonintrusive imaging system to identify anomalies within the vehicle, leading to the successful interception of the illicit cargo. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating smuggling operations along the U.S.-Mexico border, even as illegal border crossings have reportedly decreased to record lows.

Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, who oversees the Hidalgo Port of Entry, emphasized the importance of maintaining rigorous scrutiny at the border. “This interception is a powerful reminder that our CBP officers are on duty 24/7, employing every resource to detect and deter those who attempt to exploit our borders,” Rodriguez stated in a communication with Fox News Digital.

Despite a significant drop in border crossings, which fell from over 144,000 encounters in December 2024 to just 10,000 in April 2025, CBP has encountered several high-profile smuggling attempts in recent months. In February, agents detained a truckload of what was labeled as “roses,” which concealed over 515 pounds of cocaine. Shortly thereafter, on April 2, CBP reported seizing another shipment containing 298 pounds of cocaine, valued at around $2.6 million, hidden within a truck that was purportedly carrying carrots.

The challenges of smuggling are not limited to narcotics. In late April, CBP announced the interception of a vehicle attempting to cross the border with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, 16 AK rifles, 24 rifle magazines, 16 rifle stocks, and 20 pistol grips among other weapon parts.

Rodriguez reiterated the agency’s commitment to combating the constant threat of illicit narcotics and other smuggling activities. “The threat of illicit narcotics is constant, but so is our vigilance,” he remarked.

These recent seizures underscore the persistent efforts of CBP agents to thwart smuggling operations and protect the integrity of U.S. borders, even amidst fluctuating patterns in illegal crossings.

According to Fox News, the ongoing vigilance of CBP agents is crucial in addressing the evolving tactics employed by traffickers.
