India achieved a historic victory over Afghanistan, winning by an innings and 300 runs, highlighted by Shubman Gill’s century and debutant Manav Suthar’s exceptional six-wicket haul.

India made history in Mullanpur, delivering a commanding performance against Afghanistan in the one-off Test match. The hosts secured their largest-ever victory by an innings margin, defeating Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs on June 8, 2026. This remarkable win unfolded at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, where India completed a clean sweep of both Afghan innings in a single day.

Choosing to bat first, India set a formidable target, declaring their first innings at a staggering 564 for eight. Captain Shubman Gill led the charge with a brilliant 126 runs off 177 balls, anchoring the innings with poise and precision. KL Rahul complemented Gill’s efforts with a fluent century of his own, scoring 100 runs. Rishabh Pant added excitement to the innings with a quickfire 81, including three sixes in a single over. Washington Sundar contributed a crucial unbeaten 52 runs lower down the order, pushing the total far beyond Afghanistan’s reach.

The Afghan batting lineup struggled under immense pressure, facing a daunting task to chase down India’s mammoth total. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, making his Test debut, made a significant impact by dismantling the top and middle order of the Afghan team with his sharp turn and precision. Suthar’s impressive figures of 6 for 33 led to Afghanistan being bowled out for just 152 runs in 58.4 overs during the first session of Day 3.

With the follow-on enforced, Indian skipper Shubman Gill quickly reintroduced his spin attack. The second innings mirrored the first, as Afghanistan’s batters continued to struggle against India’s slow bowlers. Washington Sundar once again shone with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 36 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav contributed with 3 for 30. Afghanistan’s resistance crumbled, and they were dismissed for a mere 112 runs in 35.5 overs, just before the scheduled close of play.

This victory by 300 runs surpassed India’s previous record for the largest innings win, which was also against Afghanistan in Bengaluru in 2018, where India won by an innings and 262 runs. As Afghanistan continues to grapple with the challenges posed by quality spin bowling in Test cricket, India leaves Mullanpur with a remarkable and record-breaking performance.

According to BCCI, this match not only highlights India’s dominance in the longest format of the game but also showcases the emergence of new talent like Manav Suthar, who made an unforgettable debut.
