Poland’s military shot down several drones that violated its airspace amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine, prompting heightened security measures and coordination with NATO.
Polish defense officials confirmed that the military successfully shot down “hostile” drones early Monday morning. This action comes in response to escalating attacks by Russia on neighboring Ukraine.
Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk announced the operation on X, stating that efforts to “neutralize objects that have violated and exceeded the border of the Republic of Poland” were underway. He also indicated that both the President and Prime Minister of Poland had been informed of the situation.
Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of communication, noting that the Polish military was in “constant contact with NATO command.” He further revealed that the Territorial Defense Forces had been activated to conduct ground searches for the downed drones.
In a message on X, Kosiniak-Kamysz urged the public to remain calm and to rely solely on official announcements from military and state services. He advised citizens to avoid approaching any fragments of the drones and to report such findings to the police.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated he was maintaining regular communication with both the President and the Minister of Defense. He mentioned receiving a “direct report from the operational commander” regarding the situation.
The Operational Command of the Armed Forces linked the drone incursions to the ongoing Russian offensive in Ukraine. They described the violation of Polish airspace as an “act of aggression” that posed a significant threat to the safety of Polish citizens.
The Command reported that, as a result of the Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory, there had been an unprecedented violation of Polish airspace by drone-type objects. They activated “defensive procedures” and, with the assistance of the Polish Armed Forces, made decisions to neutralize any potential threats.
“Some of the drones that entered our airspace were shot down. Efforts are underway to search for and locate the possible crash sites of these objects,” the Operational Command stated. They assured that the situation was being closely monitored and that Polish and allied forces remained fully prepared for any further actions.
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and the potential for escalation as Poland navigates its security concerns amid the conflict in Ukraine. The Polish government is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of its airspace and citizens in light of the recent developments.
