Heavy rains have disrupted connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, while alternative routes remain operational.
Srinagar: Authorities issued a new traffic advisory on Friday for commuters in Jammu and Kashmir as persistent rainfall and landslides have significantly affected road connectivity across the region.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has initiated clearance operations in the Pir Panjal area; however, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remains closed due to extensive damage at multiple locations.
According to officials, traffic is currently flowing smoothly on the Mughal Road and the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road, as indicated in the advisory. In contrast, Sinthan Road is accessible only to light motor vehicles (LMVs) and is under the supervision of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is obstructed at several points, particularly between Jakheni and Chenani, where the road surface has suffered significant deterioration. Restoration efforts are ongoing, but officials advise commuters to avoid this route until further notice.
Travelers are encouraged to adhere to lane discipline on the operational routes, as reckless overtaking has caused congestion at various locations. Authorities have also cautioned the public against relying on unverified reports regarding the reopening of the highway, stressing the importance of following official communications only.
Individuals planning to travel are urged to stay informed by checking the official Twitter handle and Facebook page of J&K Traffic Police for real-time traffic updates.
