The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International hosted a luncheon featuring former Indian Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, emphasizing the Indian Diaspora’s impact on global STEM fields.
The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International, along with its New York chapters, hosted a memorable Meet and Greet luncheon on November 5th at Hotel Lexington Plaza in Manhattan. The event featured Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, the former Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture of India, and attracted a diverse audience of GOPIO members, chapter officials, community leaders, and media representatives.
The luncheon was skillfully hosted by GOPIO Life Member Ashok Bhatt, who welcomed the attendees and set the tone for the gathering. GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham delivered an impassioned speech about the organization’s mission and its numerous accomplishments in empowering People of Indian Origin (PIOs) around the globe. He highlighted the importance of community engagement and the role of the diaspora in fostering connections between India and its citizens abroad.
GOPIO President Prakash Shah provided a historical overview of the Indian Diaspora, tracing its roots back to ancient times. He emphasized the cultural significance of Indian heritage, particularly in Southeast Asia, where magnificent Hindu temples still stand as testaments to the enduring influence of Indian culture. Shah underscored the necessity for India to strengthen its ties with the global diaspora, which now numbers over 35 million people.
Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi addressed the audience, highlighting the pivotal role that the Indian Diaspora plays in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Western countries. She acknowledged the contributions of the diaspora in enhancing India’s global standing and took the time to answer questions from attendees, offering insightful perspectives on various topics.
As a token of appreciation, GOPIO presented Smt. Lekhi with collector’s items, including two designs of First Day Covers released by the U.S. Postal Service during the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York in 1989. This historic event marked the inception of GOPIO and served as a reminder of the organization’s long-standing commitment to the Indian community worldwide.
The luncheon exemplified GOPIO’s ongoing dedication to fostering connections among the global Indian community, celebrating cultural heritage, and promoting professional and social advancement.
