Omar Abdullah expresses optimism that the Supreme Court will establish a timeline for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood during the upcoming hearing on October 10.

Srinagar: Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, conveyed his optimism on Monday regarding the Supreme Court of India’s upcoming hearing, scheduled for October 10. He expressed hope that the Court would set a timeline for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

“We have been dragged into a prolonged wait by the central government regarding the restoration of statehood. But we now place our hopes in the Supreme Court. We believe it will take a favorable view and ensure our statehood is restored,” Omar stated while addressing reporters.

In response to Mehbooba Mufti’s recent protest concerning the conditions of Kashmiri prisoners, Omar emphasized that the issue lies entirely with the central government. “We have no authority to bring the prisoners back to the Valley. That power rests solely with the Centre. It’s not in our hands,” he remarked.

Omar acknowledged the validity of concerns regarding the health and legal rights of detainees but pointed out that expecting regional parties to intervene in matters controlled by New Delhi is unrealistic.

As the Supreme Court hearing approaches, the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir remains charged with anticipation regarding the future of statehood and the rights of its citizens. The outcome of the hearing could have significant implications for the region, which has been under central governance since the abrogation of its special status in August 2019.

Omar Abdullah’s remarks reflect a broader sentiment among regional leaders who are advocating for the restoration of statehood and addressing the issues faced by the local population. The upcoming Supreme Court decision is seen as a pivotal moment that could redefine the relationship between Jammu and Kashmir and the central government.

As the situation develops, many are looking to the judiciary to provide clarity and direction on these pressing issues, hoping for a resolution that honors the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
