The remains of Ilan Weiss, an Israeli hostage held for nearly 700 days in Gaza, have been recovered, marking a bittersweet moment for his family and community.
The Israeli military announced on Friday that the remains of Ilan Weiss, who was held captive in the Gaza Strip for 693 days, have been recovered. This operation was conducted jointly by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israeli Security Agency.
Weiss, a resident of Kibbutz Be’eri, was taken hostage during the October 7 Massacre when he left his home to join the kibbutz emergency response team. The IDF confirmed that he was murdered and kidnapped by Hamas during this attack.
His wife, Shiri, 54, and their daughter, Noga, 19, were also taken hostage but were released as part of a ceasefire agreement in November 2023. The recovery of Weiss’s body comes alongside the identification process of another Israeli individual whose remains were also found on the same day, according to reports from The Associated Press.
Rubi Chen, a father who believes his son is still missing in Gaza, expressed his feelings regarding the recovery of Weiss’s body. “It’s a bittersweet moment that the Weiss family is reunited with their loved one, even though he’s coming back not as they would have wanted,” he stated. Chen’s family has received intelligence suggesting that his son, Itay, did not survive the October 7 attack, but Hamas has not provided any information regarding his current status.
The Israeli Hostages and Missing Families Forum described Ilan Weiss as a devoted family man who was humble, principled, and dedicated to his daughters. “He loved hosting guests, tending his garden, and enjoying a beer. On weekends, he would go mountain biking with his brother-in-law, Gil Boyum, who was also killed during the attack,” the forum noted.
As of Friday, there are still 48 hostages believed to be held in Gaza, with 20 of them thought to be alive, according to The Times of Israel.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog extended his condolences to the Weiss family and the community of Kibbutz Be’eri following the recovery of Ilan’s remains. He praised Weiss for his courage and noble spirit during the attack, stating, “In his death, he gave life. And ever since, his family has shown extraordinary strength in their struggle for his return.”
Herzog condemned the actions of Hamas, calling them crimes against humanity, and emphasized the need for the international community to take moral action. “We will not rest until every one of them is brought home, the living to the loving embrace of their families, and the fallen to be laid to rest in dignity. Every last one,” he asserted.
