A wedding celebration turned tragic on May 29 when Indian-American pilot Dave Fiji was killed in a helicopter crash just hours after marrying his wife, Jesni, in north Georgia.
ATLANTA, GA — A joyous wedding day turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on May 29 when Indian-American pilot Dave Fiji lost his life in a helicopter crash just hours after exchanging vows with his wife, Jesni, in north Georgia.
Fiji, a first officer with Endeavor Air, was piloting a Robinson R66 helicopter that crashed near Dawsonville shortly after departing from the wedding venue. Jesni survived the crash and is currently recovering at a metro Atlanta hospital.
The couple’s wedding took place at The Revere in Dawsonville, where nearly 400 guests celebrated their union earlier that day. “My son was so happy,” George Fiji, Dave’s father, told Atlanta News First.
Dave and Jesni met through church connections that spanned Georgia and South Carolina. Following their wedding reception, the newlyweds boarded a helicopter intended for DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. Tragically, the helicopter never reached its destination, crashing in a heavily wooded area not far from where the couple had just celebrated their marriage.
<p“It took them a while to locate the helicopter itself,” George Fiji remarked, highlighting the challenges faced by rescue teams.
Jesni remained trapped in the wreckage for several hours before rescuers were able to reach her. According to George, she sustained cuts and bruises but fortunately did not suffer any broken bones. “She’s devastated, but she’s recovering,” he added.
In the moments leading up to the flight, Dave had expressed concerns about the weather conditions. “Since my son was a pilot, he told the pilot that there is zero visibility and when there is zero visibility like this, we never fly,” George explained. Jesni later recounted that the pilot responded by stating the helicopter would fly at a higher altitude.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the crash, but as of now, the cause of the accident remains undetermined.
As the family grapples with their loss, George emphasized that their Christian faith has been a source of strength during this difficult time. “God granted us a perfect wedding, and within a few hours everything changed into tragedy,” he said. “The only place we can find answers and peace is in God.”
This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life and the fragility of joy. As the community mourns the loss of a promising young pilot, the family continues to seek solace in their faith and the memories of a beautiful wedding day.
