United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasizes the urgent need to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy to combat the global climate crisis, following a significant UN General Assembly resolution.

NEW YORK, NY – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has identified fossil fuels as the primary driver of the ongoing climate crisis. His remarks came in the wake of the UN General Assembly’s adoption of a resolution concerning the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on states’ obligations related to climate change.

In a statement made on May 20, Guterres welcomed the resolution, stating, “The path to climate justice runs through a rapid, just, and equitable transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy.”

The UN chief characterized the resolution as “a powerful affirmation of international law, climate justice, science, and the responsibility of states to protect people from the escalating climate crisis.” He underscored the moral imperative to address the inequities associated with climate change, noting, “Those least responsible for climate change are paying the highest price. That injustice must end.”

Guterres further outlined the challenges ahead, emphasizing the need to maintain the global temperature increase to within 1.5°C. He called for a collective effort to build “a safer, fairer, and more resilient future for all,” while highlighting that renewable energy represents the most affordable and secure energy supply available.

Earlier that same day, the UN General Assembly passed the draft resolution with a recorded vote of 141 in favor, eight against, and 28 abstentions. This resolution urges nations to adhere to international obligations aimed at protecting the climate system and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As the world grapples with the consequences of climate change, Guterres’s comments serve as a clarion call for immediate action and a shift towards sustainable energy solutions.

According to IANS, the resolution marks a significant step in the global effort to address climate change and the responsibilities of nations in mitigating its effects.
