Amit Kshatriya, an Indian American leader at NASA, played a pivotal role in the successful Artemis II mission, marking a significant milestone in lunar exploration.
HOUSTON, TX — The Indian American community is celebrating the achievements of Amit Kshatriya following the successful completion of NASA’s Artemis II mission, which included a historic moon flyby that no human had previously experienced.
As the associate administrator, Kshatriya serves as NASA’s top civil servant and chief operating officer. His responsibilities encompass the coordination of the agency’s various centers and mission directorates. During the Artemis II mission, Kshatriya focused on ensuring that all program elements were aligned, overseeing critical aspects such as engineering, operations, safety, and mission readiness.
Kshatriya’s journey at NASA began in 2003, where he has since held a variety of roles across engineering and operations. His experience includes positions as a software engineer, robotics engineer, and spacecraft operator on International Space Station (ISS) assembly missions. From 2014 to 2017, he served as a flight director, leading mission control teams responsible for the operations of the ISS.
In subsequent years, Kshatriya took on management roles within the ISS Vehicle Office, where he oversaw engineering, logistics, and hardware integration. His expertise eventually led him to NASA headquarters, where he contributed to the uncrewed Artemis I mission and participated in the planning and integration efforts for the agency’s ambitious Moon to Mars initiatives.
Born in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and raised in Katy, Texas, Kshatriya is the son of first-generation Indian immigrants. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and later obtained a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin.
Throughout his career, Kshatriya has been recognized for his contributions to NASA, receiving the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal and the Silver Snoopy award, which honors individuals for their significant contributions to flight safety.
With the Artemis II mission now complete, NASA is poised to utilize the data gathered during this historic endeavor to inform the next phases of its lunar exploration program. Kshatriya continues to play a vital role in the senior leadership team overseeing these future initiatives, ensuring that the agency remains on track for its ambitious goals.
