Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott emphasizes the need for his team to build on past successes as they prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

New Delhi, September 16 (ANI) – Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, is urging his team to capitalize on their impressive performance at last year’s T20 World Cup and continue their evolution as a competitive force in international cricket.

Since taking the helm in 2022, Trott has guided Afghanistan to new heights, highlighted by their remarkable journey to the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. This achievement showcased the potential of the emerging cricketing nation and set a strong foundation for future endeavors.

As Afghanistan gears up for a crucial match against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup, scheduled for Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, Trott is challenging his players to push their limits and create even more memorable moments on the global stage. With less than six months until the next T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the stakes are high.

Reflecting on his time with the team, Trott shared, “Since I’ve been with the side, we’ve had some memorable moments. I think back to when we beat Bangladesh in a 50-over series in Bangladesh for the first time in 2023. It had never been done before, and given how strong Bangladesh have been at home, to go there and do that gave us a lot of confidence and positivity.”

He continued, “Then there was the win in St Vincent at the 2024 T20 World Cup, which helped us qualify for the semi-final. That was such a tight, historic game, and it gave us great belief. This group I’m currently working with is not shy about achieving new things or breaking new ground.”

Trott emphasized the resilience of the Afghan team, stating, “Whenever there’s something that hasn’t been done before, like a big obstacle or a big challenge, this Afghan side rises to the occasion. They’re not only setting new standards for themselves but also paving the way for future players to keep pushing those boundaries.”

One of Afghanistan’s significant advantages lies in their depth of quality spin bowlers. With captain Rashid Khan and veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi leading the charge, they are supported by talented spinners such as Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and AM Ghazanfar. Trott recognizes the crucial role that effective spin bowling can play, especially in subcontinental conditions, and aims to leverage this strength as they move forward.

“Right now, we have a great opportunity with the Asia Cup. Looking a bit further ahead, with the World Cup coming up in February, we have good memories of playing in the sub-continent – in Sri Lanka and India,” Trott noted.

However, he remains focused on the immediate challenge, stating, “It can be tempting to look too far ahead, but for now, Bangladesh at the Asia Cup is at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and we’re focused on winning that game.”

As Afghanistan prepares for their upcoming matches, the team is eager to build on their past achievements and continue their journey in international cricket under Trott’s guidance.
