California state Senator Scott Wiener condemned conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “vile bigot,” claiming he normalized dehumanization, following Kirk’s assassination in Utah.

California state Senator Scott Wiener has publicly condemned Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist who was recently assassinated in Utah, labeling him a “vile bigot” and asserting that he normalized “dehumanization.” In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Wiener stated, “Charlie Kirk did not deserve to die. Also, Charlie Kirk was a vile bigot who did immeasurable harm to so many people by normalizing dehumanization.” He emphasized the distinction between healthy debate and the dehumanization of individuals, calling the latter “horrific.”

The Republican National Committee’s Research account on X shared Wiener’s remarks, criticizing them as an example of the so-called “tolerant left.” The post drew reactions from various figures, including actor Dean Cain, who remarked, “Pot, meet kettle,” in response to Wiener’s comments.

In the wake of Kirk’s assassination, Wiener acknowledged the necessity of denouncing the act of political violence while also highlighting the negative impact of the movement Kirk helped to foster. He described this movement as having “brainwashed” individuals with “poison.” In a post dated September 11, Wiener articulated a nuanced perspective, stating, “Multiple things can be true: Political violence is toxic & Kirk’s assassination must be condemned. Kirk was exceptionally talented & helped build a movement. That movement brainwashed many young men with bigoted, violent poison. Condemn his murder, but do not lionize him.”

Wiener had previously characterized the slaying as “horrific” and called for “basic safeguards” regarding access to firearms. He expressed concern over the dangers posed by political violence, stating, “Charlie Kirk’s murder is horrific. Political violence is never the answer. It takes lives & makes our political system toxic & dangerous. We need basic safeguards on accessing guns. No one should have to live in fear of being targeted with gun violence.”

Wiener’s comments have sparked a significant debate about the implications of political rhetoric and the responsibilities of public figures in the current climate of heightened political tensions. As discussions continue, many are reflecting on the impact of language and the potential consequences of dehumanizing discourse.

According to Fox News, the reactions to Wiener’s statements illustrate the deep divisions within political discourse today, as both sides grapple with the aftermath of violence and the role of ideology in shaping public opinion.
