IPL cricketer Abishek Porel has been arrested in West Bengal on allegations of rape and criminal intimidation, following claims made by a woman regarding their relationship.
Abishek Porel, a cricketer for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been arrested by West Bengal Police in connection with serious allegations involving rape and criminal intimidation. The arrest took place at the Mogra police station in Hooghly district, where the case was registered.
The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was taken into custody on Tuesday after a woman accused him of having sexual relations with her under the pretense of a promise to marry. According to police reports, the woman alleged that their relationship began in 2020 and continued for approximately three years. However, she claims that Porel began to distance himself from her last year.
The allegations against Porel include charges of rape, criminal intimidation, and other offenses. Following his arrest, he was presented before the Chunchura District Court. Porel has publicly denied the allegations, labeling them as false and asserting his innocence. The investigation is ongoing, with the Mogra police actively pursuing the case.
The complaint was filed on June 23 by a dental college student from Karnataka, along with her mother. In her statement, the woman accused Porel of forcing her into a physical relationship and subsequently threatening her with intimate videos. She also claimed that he attempted to intimidate her through phone calls and messages from an Instagram account allegedly managed by an associate, as well as from another mobile number.
In light of the serious nature of the allegations, the case has drawn significant attention. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya issued a directive on July 14, instructing police to continue their efforts to locate Porel and to seize any electronic devices that could contain sensitive material related to the case. The police have registered the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act, including Sections 64(1), 66, 69, 74, and 75(2), along with Sections 66E and 72 of the IT Act.
Porel, who resides in Chandannagar and is the son of Somnath Porel, is expected to be brought before the Chinsurah court as the investigation progresses. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to gather evidence and assess the claims made by the complainant.
